Things I’ve Come to Know
Sometimes it seems impossible
To know what life’s about
So I wrote this little song
To sort a few things out
Brother, don’t mistake me
I’m not a man to preach
I only sing these words to you
To try and remind me
The ones who’ll cut you deepest
Are the ones you least expect
What you did and what you didn’t
Can both produce regret
Forgiveness don’t come easy
Even if you bring dessert
And you ain’t fooling no one
With your cleanest dirty shirt
And when a woman says “Let’s dance”
Son, you’d better go
Love her while you have a chance
Things I’ve come to know
Sometimes the devil’s playthings
Are the busiest of hands
And the wisdom of a child
Surprises an old man
Guns don’t help much either
But desperation kills
Pennies add up slowly
Stop for dollar bills
And when a woman says “Let’s dance”
Son, you’d better go
Love her while you have a chance
Things I’ve come to know
There’s no price too low to pay
For other people’s stuff
But when it comes down to your own
You’ll never get enough
When you’ve put in all the work
For what you’re wanting now
You’ll feel like the world
Owes you more somehow
And when a woman says “Let’s dance”
Son, you’d better go
Love her while you have a chance
Things I’ve come to know
Set aside your best laid plans
And screw the status quo
Live it up and tip the band
Things I’ve come to know
