Carrying Mail

Carrying Mail

Who’s killing time at midday
Who’s due again in court
Who’s never home or all alone
Or behind on child support
Fresh sod laid for promotions
Weeds blooming in hard times
Separations to vacations
Sure, I’ve learned all the signs

It’s a heavy load
Mmhmm but lighter as I go
Give it all away
And start again tomorrow

Highlights on to Seventeen
Report cards and SATs
I know who’s expecting
Or assigning their trustees
Pages of your life flip past
In a winding paper trail
You don’t need to know my name
I’m just carrying your mail
I’m carrying your mail

It’s a heavy load
Mmhmm but lighter as I go
Give it all away
And start again tomorrow

A daddy’s truck is gone
There’s another in her drive
But I’ve noticed now
Their boy’s always outside
Standing ‘round the sidewalk
And staring up the street
Do my best to find his eyes
And smile when we meet
I’m smiling when we meet

It’s a heavy load
Mmhmm but lighter as I go
Give it all away
And start again tomorrow

It’s an endless chain
Mmhmm I’m learning as I go
Give it all away
And start again tomorrow
