Sober as Sunrise

Sober as Sunrise

Dark bars were made for men like me
I could throw up my hands and go peacefully
Got a lonesome that grips me late at night
And a face that looks best by fading light

Wasn’t born to engage, I was born to escape
And I’ve never been in sorrier shape
I could pull up a stool and never walk out
Got plenty of things to drink about

But I wake each morning and stare down the dawn
Try to lay some new tracks for this train I’m on
Still spend some time feeling forlorn
But I’m sober as sunrise on Monday morn

I wonder sometimes how easy it’d be
To follow the path of the men before me
Who burdened with more than they could bear
Fell down the neck of a bottle somewhere

While some might judge, it makes perfect sense
To those of us dangling down at our wit’s end
When you’re fighting like hell just to get through
Then pick your own poison’s the best you can do

But I wake each morning and stare down the dawn
Try to lay some new tracks for this train I’m on
Still spend some time feeling forlorn
But I’m sober as sunrise on Monday morn

And I wake each morning and stare down the dawn
Try to lay some new tracks for this train I’m on
Still spend some time feeling forlo-o-orn
But I’m sober as sunrise on Monday morn
